Patient Suitability

Norwest Wellbeing accepts referrals for motivated adult and adolescent patients (16+) who benefit from a brief, solution-focused adjunct. We work with medically stable patients capable of engaging in a structured therapeutic process.

Anxiety and stress management

Support for patients with moderate anxiety, panic, stress, and specific phobias (including public speaking, performance anxiety, dental or medical anxiety). Our approach complements psychological models such as CBT, adding somatic regulation and solution-oriented strategies.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Referral pathway for patients with a formal IBS diagnosis. We deliver the evidence-based Gut Directed Hypnotherapy protocol to regulate the gut brain axis and reduce symptom burden.

Smoking and vaping cessation

Suitable for patients ready to disengage from nicotine dependence and commit to a structured brief intervention protocol.

Medically stable weight management

Behavioral and motivational support for patients implementing lifestyle, diet, or exercise prescriptions with their treating teams.

Adjunctive chronic pain support

Assistance for patients managing chronic pain who require tools for regulating pain related distress, fear avoidance, and adherence to multidisciplinary plans.

Exclusion Criteria and Urgent Referrals

Norwest Wellbeing is not a crisis service. To ensure appropriate care and patient safety, we are unable to accept referrals for patients presenting with:

  • Active psychosis or unmanaged severe mental illness
  • Acute suicidality or recent significant self harm
  • Severe or complex personality disorders requiring specialist programs (for example DBT)
  • Active, unmanaged substance use disorders
  • Patients requiring immediate or acute crisis intervention

Patients who present with these conditions will be redirected to their treating physician or the local Mental Health Triage service. If a patient is in acute crisis, please contact the NSW Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511 or advise attendance at the nearest emergency department by calling 000.

Our Clinical Modalities

Strategic psychotherapy and solution focused brief therapy

A practical, goal driven cognitive approach that amplifies patient strengths and previous successes to co design future oriented solutions. This brief intervention model aligns with GP care plans and supports patients to become self reliant between sessions.

Clinical hypnotherapy

We deliver clinical hypnotherapy to embed cognitive and solution focused strategies. This focused state of attention allows patients to access therapeutic suggestions that reframe unhelpful patterns, regulate the gut brain axis in IBS, and decouple triggers from habitual responses such as smoking. Clinical hypnotherapy is endorsed by the Australian Psychological Society and supported by an expanding evidence base for anxiety, pain, and sleep disorders.

Billing and Mental Health Care Plans

Norwest Wellbeing operates as a private billing clinic. Patients do not require a Mental Health Care Plan, and Medicare rebates under the MHCP scheme do not apply. Eligible patients may claim rebates through their private health fund under hypnotherapy items; we encourage patients to confirm their specific policy entitlements. The private billing model allows rapid access, no waitlists, and freedom from the ten session cap.

Our Commitment to Collaborative Care

We recognise hypnotherapy as one component of a multidisciplinary plan. Our communication keeps referring practitioners informed at every milestone.

  • Notification of engagement: Confirmation once the patient attends their initial consultation.
  • Assessment summary: A concise update shared via your preferred secure messaging provider outlining presenting goals and the agreed therapeutic plan.
  • Discharge summary: Outcomes and recommendations upon completion of the treatment block.
